| Third generation bluesman, John Lee Hooker Junior, is back in Bellingham, WA for a performance at the Wild Buffalo House of Music on Saturday, January 21. Hooker Jr. has been nominated for and won some prestigious awards over the past year and has a rapidly growing blues following for his songwriting. Is this an overnight sucess story (W.C. Handy Best New Artist) or the Comeback Artist of the Year ( title of his 2004 Bay Area Blues Society award)? John Lee Hooker Junior began his career early, he performed on Detroit's WJBK radio when he was eight years old. He was touring with his venerable father, John Lee Hooker, during his teen years. After such a promising start, Hooker Jr's career would halt for nearly 25 years as he fell into the temptations surrounding the blues musicians world. The prodigal son is back on top now, older, wiser and stronger delivering Blues with a Vengence (his Kent records CD) and touring non-stop. John Lee Hooker Jrs live shows do include some covers of his famous fathers classic blues songs, but the younger Hooker's own originals take the larger portion of the set list. The audience can expect to hear a contemporary rhythm and blues style onstage from Hooker Jr. and his band. Opening for Hooker Jr at the Wild Buffalo (Saturday, January 21, 2006) is Bellingham's Margaret Wilder Band. Sassy and rocking blues from these local favorites have led them to performances at the WBS BB Award winning Mount Baker Blues Festival and for the Washington Blues Society. The band features Margaret Wilder on vocals and keyboard, Willie Straub on guitar, Airplane Dave Brown on bass and Kim Carson on drums. For ticket information for the Bellingham performance of John Lee Hooker Junior call the Wild Buffalo (208. W. Holly) at 360-752-0848. |
