| For those of us who have been watching Northwest blues evolve over the past few decades, our introduction to Curtis Salgado began with the then local Robert Cray Band. Remember when you could go dance to them at Pete's Tavern in Bellingham for a $2 cover charge? He spent six years with the group and appears on Crays debut album. Salgado went from there to fronting Roomful of Blues in the mid-eighties and even took a shift as lead vocalist for Santana in 1995. Curtis Salgado is often credited with providing the inspiration for the Blues Brothers. The Saturday Night Live musical skit would eventually result in both an album and cult film. John Belushi was in Eugene, Oregon during the filming of Animal House and caught Salgado's live act. The first Blues Brothers album is dedicated to Curtis Salgado, so there seems little question that the rumor is true. Certainly this standout vocalist and harpman has inspired Northwest audiences and musicians for decades. Salgado's unique take on soul, blues and rock n'roll is displayed both on his original songs and tunes of other songwriters he covers. His most recent release Strong Suspicion in March of 2004 includes the Beattles obscurity "I'll be back." The Shanachie Entertainment release also includes luminary guest performers like slide guitarist Sonny Landreth and vocalist Bekka Bramlett. Portland audiences have watched their hometown blues hero Salgado take off nationally with more than a little pride. His recent WC Handy award nomination in the Soul Blues Album category firmly establishes Salgado as a major presence in the contemporary world blues community. Salgado's grueling touring takes him out of the Northwest and onto the international scene. Whatcom County blues fans will have a chance to catch him live at the Wild Buffalo on Friday, February 10, 2005. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. |

| CURTIS SALGADO | |||||||||||||||||||||||
| Regarding the Jam at Duffs Garage... by Texas Jimmy Drounette I'm sitting under the bridge at the edge of the river, my mind is reeling from the show. I went to a club on the cool side of Portland to hear the bad man blow. He was smokin the reeds to a stymied crowd, backed up by the area's best. He worked the crowd like a master, like a man on fire, obsessed. When he was done he walked off stage, shook hands and patted backs. As courteous am Mr. Curtis was, it showed me what many lack. Humility and humbleness, dignity with grace and style... He laid it down then hung around, with people who love him, for a while. Hat's off to Curtis Salgado, the man's just keeping it real. An inspiration to all who come after, to do it from the heart with feel! (copyright 2004 by Texas Jimmy Drounette, All Rights Reserved) |
